France's new Defense Minister Bruno Le Maire said he had withdrawn from the government to facilitate the formation of a new cabinet after the resignation of Prime Minister Sebastian Le Corney.
French President Macron's decision late Sunday to return Le Maire to the ministerial post to take charge of defense affairs sparked a political backlash, including opposition within the government.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau complained that the reactivation of Macron's close ally, who served as finance minister for seven years, failed to reflect a break with the past. Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Le Korney announced his resignation, blaming the stubborn stance of different political factions.
Le Maire wrote on X: "I noticed that my decision triggered an incomprehensible, erroneous and disproportionate response from some people. I hope this decision will allow discussions to restart around the new government needed to form France."
